Adapting to the Way Things Change: My Curly Hair Journey

by Mona Harb, the Original Curlyologist

I want to share something close to my heart with those of you who’ve experienced hair loss and are now navigating your curly hair. I’m with you on this journey.

Woman with eyes closed and left hand and fingers in her hair. She's wearing an open neck blouse with a colorful lipstick print with text that says suddenly my usual curly style just wasn't working.

Last year, I went through some health challenges that caused me to lose some hair. It’s coming back now, but my curls have changed. They’re tighter, and the hair shaft is thinner than before. I wasn’t used to this, and suddenly, my usual curly style just wasn’t working.

When I tried blow-drying, it became a lengthy process — something I wasn’t used to, and the results weren’t what I hoped for. So, I get how frustrating this is.

What's been helping me...adapting to curly hair changes

What’s been helping me is letting my hair air dry and using a set of hot rollers. After that, a little blow-dry just to soften the shape. This works especially well in winter when the humidity is low. Come summer, though, I’m planning something different: a light keratin treatment. I’ll be doing that in April, when the weather warms up. So, next time you see me, you might notice a smoother, different style. It’s just a little change, but it will help me feel more confident as I let my curls recover.

The big lesson here is this: we have to adapt as our hair changes. We can’t force it to fit the way it used to be. It’s okay to pause, to try new styles, and to give yourself grace. Yes, it’s tough.

But I’m hopeful. I’m looking forward to this next look, and I know these changes are just part of my hair’s journey. And, my friends, adapting to curly hair changes is something I’m ready to embrace.
